Spotlight Series 37 Alicia Del Real

Spotlight Series 37
Alicia Del Real

Another edition of Maria Pinto’s Spotlight Series, In Her Own Words, is here. Each month, we feature the dynamic, stylish, and powerful women who inspire us daily.

This month’s spotlight features – Alicia Del Real; CEO and Partner at the Center for Advanced Emotional Intelligence

What was your path to getting where you are today?

I spent a decade in Finance before moving to Strategy, then Sales, and now Organizational Consulting. Prior to AEI I was an executive a PepsiCo leading a 200-person sales organization – and it was during that time that I realized if you don’t get the culture right it is very challenging to get the sustainable results you are seeking.

So, while working, I went to graduate school to study organizational psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. When I had the chance to join The Center for Advanced Emotional Intelligence and do the best part of my job as my full time job – helping leaders and teams reach their potential – I took the opportunity. I love what I do, and it continues to be incredibly gratifying.

How do you create a work-life balance for yourself?

Rather than striving for work-life balance, I focus on work-life quality. Balance can often feel unattainable when navigating a career that involves travel, three children, and a husband. Instead, I prioritize being intentional with my time, to ensure that the moments I do have truly count. For example, I make a conscious effort not to travel on Mondays, allowing us to dedicate that evening to one-on-one dinners with our children. This creates meaningful connections and memories.

What do you love and appreciate about being a woman?

One of the things I love most about being a woman is the community. Women have the ability to uplift, support, and empower each other. I also appreciate the ability to lead with the empathy that comes with being a woman. Whether in leadership, motherhood, or friendships, women navigate challenges often via meaningful connections.

One of the biggest challenges is overcoming our own limiting beliefs and habits. It’s a journey that can lead to enormous growth and impact.

What brings you joy?

Joy for me comes from spending time with my incredible friends and family. I especially enjoy traveling the world with my family, but it’s also the small moments, like seeing my boys play in the park, that keep me joyful and grateful.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’d describe my style as a blend of classic and modern. I gravitate toward pieces that make a statement while remaining professional.

What is important to you when it comes to buying clothing?

When I shop, I look for quality. It’s important that my clothing not only looks good but also makes me feel confident. For public speaking, I only wear Maria Pinto—it gives me confidence.

How do you take care of yourself?

I prioritize fitness as a key part of my self-care routine. I’m a dedicated 6 AM gym person and never miss my favorite Saturday class at Midtown with the incredible Martin Ortiz. Beyond exercise, I make a conscious effort to prioritize sleep—it’s absolutely essential for staying energized and performing at my best.

What wisdom would you tell your younger self?

What I’d tell my younger self is to drop the guilt. You’re doing your best, and what truly matters is showing up when it counts. Let go of the small stuff and trust that your impact is greater than you realize.

Who are some of your style or fashion icons?

First, Maria Pinto – she’s been a fashion icon to me for more than a decade! I’m also inspired by Rachel Comey, Phoebe Philo, and Chicago local Tricia Tunstall.

If you could live anywhere (and money is no object), where would you choose?

If money were no object, I wouldn’t settle for just one place! I’d keep our home in Chicago—it holds too many wonderful memories to leave behind. I’d also have a place in LA to stay close to our many friends and a home somewhere in Europe to enjoy the adventures of life abroad.

What are you watching, reading, and/or listening to right now?

I’m currently watching the new season of White Lotus - which I’m sure I’m not alone in! I’m an avid reader, I’m always diving into books, often on psychology and leadership, which relate to my profession. One I’d recommend is Resonant Leadership.

Best gift you've ever received?

The greatest gift I’ve ever received is my family - my three incredible boys and my wonderful husband, Remberto. They bring endless love to my life.

What are some of your favorite features about the Maria Pinto collections?

I’ve loved experiencing the evolution of the Maria Pinto collection – from M2057 to now proudly having her name in my closet. Seeing her brand grow has been incredible, and I’m proud to support such a visionary designer right here in Chicago.

Beyond that, I appreciate her modern, professional design. Her pieces blend style and versatility, allowing me to transition seamlessly from a formal client meeting to a casual dinner. Maria Pinto is truly a staple in my wardrobe.
