Another edition of Maria Pinto’s Spotlight Series, In Her Own Words, is here. Each month, we feature the dynamic, stylish, and powerful women who inspire us daily.
This month’s spotlight features – Michelle Ramirez; trial lawyer and partner at Sidley Austin LLP, as well as co-chair of Chicago SidleyWomen, an organization dedicated to the retention and promotion of women lawyers to partnership and positions of leadership within the firm.

What was your path to getting where you are today?
Before I was a lawyer, I was an eighth grade English teacher. I often joke that there is not a better training ground for litigation than middle school! But truthfully, I loved teaching, and today I am very fortunate to dedicate time as a board member to several organizations devoted to families and education, including The Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Family Services and The Saint Clement School Advisory Board.
My success at Sidley and as a litigator is the direct result of the people and mentors who support me – there are far too many to name. I lean on my mentors for advice on everything from courtroom skills to career development, and am now in the position of mentoring others.
Best piece of advice you've ever received?
Be the most prepared person in the room.
How do you create a work-life balance for yourself?
I am so fortunate to be in a career that I love. Every day is different, my work is challenging intellectually, and I am lucky to count many clients as friends, and friends as clients. That, for me, really is the ultimate balance.

What do you love and appreciate about being a woman?
I love being a woman! There is nothing like the bond of female friendships. I have dear friends going back to middle school who are still my biggest cheerleaders. And the community of strong, supportive women within my firm and in Chicago is nothing short of remarkable.
What brings you joy?
Being with my husband, my family and friends. I often say that being a parent has made me a better lawyer, and being a lawyer has made me a better parent. I just know my cross examination skills will go to good use when my kids are in high school!
How would you describe your personal style?
Courtroom/Boardroom with a side of feminine flair.
How do you take care of yourself?
Daily exercise – which may be just 10 minutes. When I am in trial or on the road, Megan Roup’s “The Sculpt Society” app is my go-to. And when I’m in Chicago, a CorePower yoga sculpt class taught by my dear friend, fellow Maria Pinto fan, and lawyer extraordinaire, Giselle Donado. It is the ultimate workout. Her class is always waitlist only - best in the city.

Michelle is wearing the Jutta top and Eugenie skirt in the Gifu print paired with the Soho belt.
Who are some of your style or fashion icons?
Amal Clooney, Stacey Bendet, Eva Longoria, Victoria Beckham, MARIA PINTO
If you could live anywhere (and money is no object), where would you choose?
Chicago. I love this city, the people, the food, the culture - the third coast.
What are you watching, reading, and/or listening to right now?
I love music. Everything from the Rolling Stones to Bad Bunny, and yes, Taylor Swift. I have a habit of listening to certain songs on repeat before a court hearing or big work event to get in my zone. My kids get such a kick out of hearing my “hype” songs (and those, will not be revealed!)
Best gift you've ever received?
My marriage. I met my husband before law school – he has been my champion for my entire career. I am very lucky.
What are some of your favorite features about the Maria Pinto collections?
Empowering + Machine washable. I’m not sure I need to say more!
