It was an honor that I never could have expected but was so grateful to receive: On May 16, I received an Honorary Doctorate from my alma mater, the School of the Art Institute, along with the amazing and talented artist Kerry James Marshall and Roberta Smith, co-chief art critic for the New York Times.
I was truly humbled to be in such company. I have been an avid fan of both Kerry's artwork and Roberta's writing for years. It was a privilege to share the stage with them!
Thank you to SAIC for all of the support over the years, and congratulations to all of the graduating students!
Earlier in the month, I had the pleasure of attending SAIC's end-of-year fashion show featuring the senior collections of graduating fashion students. This is always one of my favorite events of the year—the student designers invariably show amazing creativity and innovation.
This year was no different—tasked with presenting avant grade collections inspired by social issues of today and their own experiences, the students showed fresh, surprising, and challenging portrayals of gender and beauty. Congratulations to all on an excellent show!
